251 DESNOYERS, FERNAND. Salon des Refusés. La peinture en 1863. 139, (1)pp. 4to. Marbled boards, 1/4 cloth. Leather label. An impassioned defense of the painters of the Salon des Refusés by Desnoyers, since the 1850s one of the most important advocates of the new painting. "The critic friends of the Refusés naturally took advantage of the occasion to proclaim their heretical views. Fernand Desnoyers, formerly of the Brasserie, wrote a brochure devoted solely to insulting both the cowardly artists who had withdrawn their works and the stupid bourgeois who indulged in ridicule. In Courbet he saw the hero of the Salon des Refusés, the most rejected of the rejected, for notwithstanding the fact that he was now hors concours, one of his paintings had been refused for moral reasons and was not even permitted in the Salon des Refusés" (Rewald). Rare.
