34 BELZONI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. Narrative of the Operations and Recent Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs, and Excavations, in Egypt and Nubia; and of a Journey to the Coast of the Red Sea, in Search of the Ancient Berenice; and Another to the Oasis of Jupiter Ammon. xix, (1), 483, (1)pp. Fine lithographic frontis. portrait printed by Hullmandel; 1 plate of inscriptions. This copy also contains a tracing of the "Map of Roads to the Mountains of Emeralds and Berenice on the Red Sea" (plate 38 in the separate atlas), hand-drawn on silk, and folded into the binding at the end. 4to. 19th-century calf, newly rebacked. The text volume only, without the fine atlas of plates. First edition; second and third editions followed in 1821 and 1822 (the latter in octavo). A French translation appeared in Paris in 1821, and an Italian edition was published at Milan, 1825-6.
We quote at length from Leonora Navari, in the catalogue of the Blackmer Collection: "This was the first English work of any importance to use lithography.... Belzoni is one of the most striking and interesting figures in the history of eastern travel (DNB), and certainly, next to Burckhardt, the most interesting in the history of Egyptology and Egyptian travel. He was an actor and circus strong man [who] had studied hydraulic engineering at Rome. In 1815 he went to Egypt with the idea of interesting Mehmet Ali in a hydraulic machine for irrigation. When this project failed Burckhardt brought him to the attention of Henry Salt and proposed that Belzoni should attempt to move the colossal head of Memnon (Rhamses II) from Thebes to Cairo. This was successfully carried out in 1816, and Belzoni embarked on his amazing career as an archaeologist, still on behalf of Salt. He worked continuously from 1816 to 1819, and in spite of his limited knowledge he succeeded in removing an enormous number of statues and sarcophagi. In 1817, he excavated Abu Simbel, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, and the tomb of Seti I, whose sarcophagus was purchased by Sir John Soane. In 1818 he opened the second pyramid at Gizeh, and identified the site of Berenice. In 1819, he left Egypt for England, undertook the production of his book, and organised an exhibition of the antiquities he had brought with him. His collection was sold at Sothebys in 1822. In 1823 he set out for Timbucktu to explore the source of the Niger and died of dysentery in December of that year. His wife Sarah was with him in Egypt, and contributed Mrs. Belzonis Trifling Account of the Women of Egypt, Nubia and Syria to the Narrative. Belzonis adventures were retold in a childrens book by Sarah Atkins as early as 1821." Intermittent light foxing.
London (John Murray), 1820. $850.00

35 BELZONI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. [With:] Plates Illustrative of the Researches and Operations of G.B. Belzoni in Egypt and Nubia. Text: xix, (1), 483, (1)pp. Fine lithographic frontis. portrait printed by Hullmandel, elaborately finished in color by hand; 1 plate of inscriptions. 4to. 19th-century calf gilt (a bit rubbed at hinges and raised bands). Plates: 44 plates on 34 sheets (2 folding), of which 19 are hand-colored lithographs; the remaining 25 plates are engravings, of which 21 are hand-colored. The plates are watermarked J. Whatman 1820 and 1821. Lrg. folio. Publishers original drab boards, 1/4 cloth, with printed cover label. First edition of the text (second and third editions followed in 1821 and 1822, the latter in octavo); proper second edition of the plates, unrecorded by Blackmer, who knew only of 1820 and 1822 editions and concluded erroneously that "Although the Narrative appeared in 3 editions, the album of Plates apparently was published only twice." A French translation appeared in Paris in 1821, and an Italian edition was published at Milan, 1825-6.
