330 MODERN ARTISTS IN AMERICA. First series [all published]. Editorial Associates: Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt. Photography: Aaron Siskind. Documentation: Bernard Karpel. 198, (2)pp. Prof. illus. 4to. Dec. boards, designed by Robert Motherwell. Originally envisioned as a continuing series, this sole issue is one of the most important publications of postwar American art, and a key source of artists statements and documentation of the New York School. At the crux of it are transcripts of the now famous panel discussions, "The Artists Sessions at Studio 35" (participants: Baziotes, Bourgeois, De Kooning, Gottlieb, Hare, Hofmann, Lassaw, Lippold, Motherwell, Newman, Reinhardt, David Smith, Tomlin and others) and "The Western Round Table of Art" (Burke, Duchamp, Goldwater, Milhaud, Schoenberg, Tobey, Frank Lloyd Wright, et al). Edited by Robert Goodnough and Douglas MacAgy, these retain "the spontaneity, the unpreparedness, the rises and falls of intensity and pointedness of the meetings themselves; though a certain pathos and loneliness appears from time to time that was not as evident at the time of the meetings as it is on reading the original text" (from the introduction). Among the many other contents of interest are the first translation of Michel Seuphors "Paris-New York 1951," overviews of exhibitions and press commentary, and a wealth of documentary photographs.
