31    ARNALDI, ENEA. (4), xxxii, 82, (2), 58, (2)pp., 6 fine folding engraved plates. Wood-engraved culs-de-lampe, lettrines. 4to. Contemporary heavy wraps. Count Arnaldi’s proposal, based on Palladian prototypes but with noteworthy innovations of his own, was originally prompted by the destruction by fire of Bibiena’s Teatro Filarmonico in 1749. He adds a discussion of Palladio’s original plans for the Teatro Olimpico. A few tears to the plates, well mended; two charming early wash drawings (a soldier, a man’s head) on the last blank leaf; a few plates touched with wash; occasional light foxing; a fine copy.

54    (BAUHAUS) Bauhaus Standard 32. 91 original patterned and decorated wallpaper samples, printed in colors on various types and textures of stock, each with model and style numbers on the verso. Title-page on coated stock, with descriptive text and technical specifications; on the verso, a full-page photographic view of the Dessau Bauhaus. Oblong 4to. Turquoise boards, 1/4 cloth, lettered in white, secured with massive nickel bolts, as issued. The recent book ‘Bauhaustapete: Reklame & Erfolg einer Marke/ Advertising & Success of a Brandname’ gives a fascinating account of the fortunes of the Bauhaus wallpaper products during the Nazi era, and the amazing persistence of these commercial lines under the Bauhaus name, even with National Socialist endorsement, years after the Bauhaus itself had been shut down. In the case of this particular swatchbook, the Dessau Bauhaus was still in operation at the time of publication, and is illustrated on the verso of the title-page, captioned in an appropriate Bauhaus font. The well-known manufacturer of the papers, Gebr. Rasch, is not named in the present swatch-book, which is stamped “J.Z. & Co./ D.” on the front cover. Covers faded and rubbed; 11 small samples, originally mounted under front cover, crudely removed.

            N.p., 1932.                                                                                                                                                                  $1,250.00

55    (BAUHAUS) Gebr. Untermann. Bauhaus 1939. Jubiläumskarte. 1f. text, 115 original patterned and decorated wallpaper samples, printed in colors on various types and textures of stock, each with model numbers on the verso. Oblong stout 4to. Turquoise boards, 1/4 cloth, lettered in white, secured with massive nickel bolts, as issued. This 1939 ‘Jubilee’ collection, marking the tenth anniversary of the Bauhaus wallpapers, is introduced with a page of remarks set, notably, in a modern Bauhaus font and layout; so is the bold front cover. The four illustrated interiors which are interspersed with the samples (die-cut with holes, to expose the actual wallpapers in the appropriate place) are, on the other hand, quaintly old-fashioned. The well-known manufacturer of the papers, Gebr. Rasch, is not named in the present swatch-book, which was marketed by Gebr. Untermann, Berlin. Front cover slightly rubbed.

Narrative of the Operations and Recent Discoveries within the Pyramids, Temples, Tombs, and Excavations, in Egypt and Nubia; and of a Journey to the Coast of the Red Sea, in Search of the Ancient Berenice; and Another to the Oasis of Jupiter Ammon. Second edition. xix, (1), 533, (1)pp. Fine lithographic frontis. portrait (printed by Hullmandel), folding two-part lithographic map of the Nile; 2 plates (including 1 of inscriptions). Lrg. stout 4to. Modern cloth with printed label. Uncut. Second edition; the first was published London 1821, with a separate folio atlas of lithographic and engraved plates. We quote at length from Leonora Navari, in the catalogue of the Blackmer Collection: “Belzoni is ‘one of the most striking and interesting figures in the history of eastern travel’ (DNB), and certainly, next to Burckhardt, the most interesting in the history of Egyptology and Egyptian travel. He was an actor and circus strong man [who] had studied hydraulic engineering at Rome. In 1815 he went to Egypt with the idea of interesting Mehmet Ali in a hydraulic machine for irrigation. When this project failed Burckhardt brought him to the attention of Henry Salt and proposed that Belzoni should attempt to move the colossal head of Memnon (Rhamses II) from Thebes to Cairo. This was successfully carried out in 1816, and Belzoni embarked on his amazing career as an ‘archaeologist,’ still on behalf of Salt. He worked continuously from 1816 to 1819, and in spite of his limited knowledge he succeeded in removing an enormous number of statues and sarcophagi. In 1817, he excavated Abu Simbel, Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, and the tomb of Seti I, whose sarcophagus was purchased by Sir John Soane. In 1818 he opened the second pyramid at Gizeh, and identified the site of Berenice. In 1819, he left Egypt for England, undertook the production of his book, and organised an exhibition of the antiquities he had brought with him. His collection was sold at Sotheby’s in 1822. In 1823 he set out for Timbucktu to explore the source of the Niger and died of dysentery in December of that year. His wife Sarah was with him in Egypt, and contributed ‘Mrs. Belzoni’s Trifling Account of the Women of Egypt, Nubia and Syria’ to the ‘Narrative.’ Belzoni’s adventures were retold in a children’s book by Sarah Atkins as early as 1821.” Pale waterstain at foot of the portrait; 1 leaf with small loss of text (transcription provided); intermittent light waterstaining.

117    BOUSSARD, J. Constructions et décorations pour jardins. Kiosques, orangeries, volières, abris divers. Par J. Boussard, architecte. (2)pp., 50 engraved plates by Boussard. Folio. Contemporary marbled boards, 1/4 leather (rubbed). Very stylishly engraved by Boussard, the plates depict a range of charming, and often entirely whimsical, constructions designed by various architects, including a garden seat at Versailles that is half tree, half classical column, with a Chinese roof; orangeries; gyms; a three-tiered combination duckhouse, henhouse, and dovecote; rustic log cabins; a combination rabbit-hutch and henhouse; enclosures for herons and goats; an elegant kennel for dogs and jackels at the Jardin des Plantes, Paris; a majestic riverside laundry for the Château de Croisy; formal garden aviaries; a medievalized observatory and pigeon-tower; a very posh artist’s studio set in a formal garden; cowbarns and goathouses; a pheasant-house in Asnières; a combination steambath and observatory; a billiard pavilion set in a garden in Nogent-sur-Marne; a boar-house; elaborate cast-iron parrot perches; and much else. Most of the plates include finely detailed and atmospheric landscape elements, and some a staffage of elegantly parasolled young ladies straight out of La Grande Jatte. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title “A mon viel ami et copain A. Dubos archte./ 21 Janv. 82/ J. Boussard.”

This comic skit about the Great Exhibition of 1851 was published uniform with (and presumably as part of) a series entitled “Comic Theatre,” intended as language instruction exercises for German beginners in English. This one is actually bound with four others in the series. A sample of the dialogue: “”Lor! But the humble turn-up of my bachelorhood--”/ “Contains at this moment the distinguished correspondent of the ‘Cannibal Islands Advertiser,’ three distressed Poles, and a Hungarian member of the Peace Congress.”/ “Then where am I to sleep?”/ “Anywhere--or nowhere. Nobody sleeps in Exhibition time, except the visitors.”

179    (CHICAGO TRIBUNE TOWER) The International Competition for a New Administration Building for the Chicago Tribune MCMXXII. Containing all the designs submitted in response to the Chicago Tribune’s $100,000 offer commemorating its seventy fifth anniversary, June 10, 1922. (8), 103, (5)pp., 281 full-page plates with facing captions. 27 illus. Lrg. stout 4to. Original burlap-covered boards, rebacked in buckram, preserving the original label. As noted by Sigfried Giedion, “the competition...drew entries from everywhere. The projects submitted give an invaluable crosssection of the architecture of this period.” The pervasive preference for ‘Woolworth Gothic’ notwithstanding, there are a few brave essays in modernism by Walter Gropius, Bruno and Max Taut, Adolf Loos and others, as well as submissions by Bragdon, Burnham, Goodhue, Holabird & Roche, Eliel Saarinen, et al. Raymond Hood was the winner. Binding very slightly cocked, but quite a fine copy, tight and clean, the perishable spine in excellent condition.

(12), 207, (1), 8, (2)pp., 2 engraved plates. Numerous engraved illus. throughout, integrated with text. Folio.Contemporary mottled calf (corners rubbed, hairline cracks at spine). First edition. “This work contains the inscriptions collected by Chishull while he was chaplain to the Levant Company at Smyrna from 1698 to 1702, and also those communicated to him by Samuel Lisle, chaplain at Smyrna from 1710 to 1719, and by Tournefort, who was in Smyrna in 1701. These last include the famous Monumentum Ancyranum and the important Sigean Inscription from the Troad, which is illustrated in one of the engraved plates. A verse-epistle, describing Chishull’s travels in the Levant, ‘Iter Asiae Poeticum,’ appears in the four-leaf appendix. Chishull had begun to issue a second part, ‘Antiquitates Asiaticae Pars Altera...Ephesus,’ but only 12 pages were printed before his death. Some copies of the ‘Antiquitates Asiaticae’ have this 12-page supplement bound in, as well as a leaf of corrections to page 61” (Blackmer). This copy, like the Blackmer copy, does not have the supplement, but does have the leaf of corrections, which the Blackmer copy lacked. The engravings are of a high standard. Front flyleaf loose; a fresh and clean copy.

(6), 163, (1)pp., 133 line-engraved plates (in 2 series) after Contant. Lrg. folio. Marbled boards, 1/4 red morocco gilt (head of backstrip chipped). The expanded edition, and the first with De Filippi’s text, published a generation after the first edition of 1842, an atlas of plates only. The most comprehensive and elaborate study of its time, the work contains highly detailed scale drawings by Contant, “ancien machiniste en chef du théâtre Impérial de l’Opéra,” documenting 30 of the most important theatres and opera houses in Europe, and their technical facilities: the old Paris Opéra and Théâtre Comique, Covent Garden and Drury Lane, La Scala, and others in Marseilles, Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Versailles, London, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Vienna, Karlsruhe, Mainz, Darmstadt, St. Petersburg, Copenhagen, Naples, Turin, Genoa, Parma, Reggio and Madrid. Grandly conceived and meticulously documented, it remained the key publication on the subject for more than thirty years, until the appearance of Sachs’ “Modern Opera Houses and Theatres” at the end of the century. A little light foxing; generally a fine crisp copy.

285    L’ESPRIT NOUVEAU. Revue internationale d’esthétique. (Revue internationale illustré de l’activité contemporaine.) Directeur: Paul Dermée. (Ozenfant et Jeanneret.) Nos. 1-28 (all published). Prof. illus., including hors-texte and color plates. 4to. Cloth. Reprint of the Paris 1920-1925 edition. “The presence of the poets meant that as well as assisting in the birth of twentieth-century visual and concrete poetry these magazines also published more formally conventional literary contributions, the content of which was, however, often of a radical nature. Indeed some of them were magazines of ideas as much as magazines of art. ‘L’esprit nouveau’, edited by Ozenfant and Le Corbusier (and Dermée for a short while), was not typical of art magazines of this time, not only in respect of its comparative longevity and substance, but also in the range of ideas to which it gave space. The sub-title of the magazine, initially ‘Revue international d’esthétique’, was soon changed to ‘Revue internationale illustré de l’activité contemporaine...arts, lettres, sciences.’ Number 16 included articles on Freud, mathematics from Einstein to Bergson, the Fauves, post-crisis economics, architecture, Greek vases, Yiddish literature, and sport (as well as the legend on the back cover: ‘L’esprit nouveau est le magazine des élites’” (Clive Phillpot, The Art Press).

Much of the content of Le Corbusier’s famous early books, with his basic statements of design philosophy, first appeared in article form in “L’esprit nouveau”: ‘Vers une architecture’, ‘L’art décoratif d’aujord’hui’, ‘Urbanisme’. Also published in its pages were joint contributions by Le Corbusier and Ozenfant (“Le purisme”, “L’angle droit”, “Le cubisme”) and other texts by Aragon, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Huidobro, Goll, Cocteau, Carrà, Charles Henry, Cendrars, Raynal, Rosenberg, Léger, Satie, Picabia, Severini, Gropius, and many others.

290    FALDA, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. Li giardini di Roma con le loro piante alzate e vedute in prospettiva. 21 etched and engraved plates, including engraved title and magnificent allegorical dedication leaf, by Gio. Battista Manelli after Arnold van Westerhout, of the garden of the “Roman Hesperides.” Oblong folio. Nineteenth-century marbled boards, 3/4 calf (rubbed). Both artistically and historically, a very important publication on nine of the most celebrated gardens of Rome--at the Vatican and Quirinal palaces, and the villas Borghese, Medici, Pamphili, Mattei, Farnese, Ludovisi and Savelli-Peretti--of which only three survive in anything resembling their original state. The extremely accurate and exquisite plates, which alternately present bird’s-eye views and prospects, are by both Falda and Simone Felice. This copy is a rare early issue, with plates before numbers (though the title-page is undated, unlike the first issue, where it is dated 1683). A few marginal stains, a little light foxing; a fine copy, with splendid impressions.

310    FOSSATI, GASPARD. Aya Sofia Constantinople as Recently Restored by Order of H.M. The Sultan Abdul Medjid. 3ff. letterpress description of the plates. Lithographic title page and 25 tinted lithographic plates (in two tints) by Louis Haghe after Fossati, mounted on guards. Printed titles in Turkish pasted beneath imprint. 2º (542 x 390 mm.). Contemporary quarter morocco (rubbed, front board detached, somewhat chipped at head and foot of spine). Occasional light dampstaining (plate 10 somewhat more affected) with partial loss of Turkish inscription below the print; a few plates a bit frayed or creased in the blank margin, where loosening from the hinges. First edition of the first modern account of Hagia Sophia. The brief text in the book (in French, notwithstanding the English title) was written from Fossati’s notes by the Vicomte Adalbert de Beaumont, and the design of the title-page is attributed to Owen Jones. Fossati, an Italian/Swiss architect who worked in Russia before travelling to Constantinople in 1837, entered the service of the Porte in 1845, and in 1847 was charged with the restoration of the Hagia Sophia. Although the separate work he intended to publish on the mosaics never appeared, and they were again covered up once the restoration work had been done, this is the first modern record of both the exterior and the interior of the building. As Abbey notes, the lithographs represent the last work undertaken by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) before he broke off his connection with William Day to concentrate on watercolor painting, and the subject was an appropriate one for a lithographer who had spent nine years of work on Roberts’ “Holy Land.” A full-scale monograph on Fossati’s work at Hagia Sophia has been published by the Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection: Teteriatnikov, Natalia B.: Mosaics of Hagia Sophia, Istanbul: The Fossati Restoration and the Work of the Byzantine Institute (Washington, D.C., 1998).

Mezinárodní sbornik soudobé aktivity/ internationaler almanach der activität der gegenwart/ recueil international de l’activité contemporaine.../ kunst, technik, literatur, soziologie, wissenschaft, modernes leben.... Redaktion: Fr. Halas, Vl. Prusa, Zd. Rossmann, B. Václavek. 203, (9)pp., 48 plates with 171 illus. Prof. illus. in text. Sm. folio. Dec. wraps. designed by Zdenek Rossmann, featuring the title in a large red disc, and a column of illustrations of the almanac’s primary areas, arranged like a strip of film. Texts in Czech, German and French. One of the major productions of the Devetsil group, appearing in the period after “Disk” and “ Pásmo” had stopped publishing, and “ReD” had not yet begun. Its emphasis was on abstraction and Functionalism, and, to some extent, Surrealism. Similar to the “Buch neuer Künstler” edited by Kassák and Moholy-Nagy, but including literature and theory in addition to the visual arts, “Fronta” marked the third phase of Devetsil’s activity, when the group was attempting to establish itself internationally, and it succeeded in soliciting original texts (“written for ‘Fronta’ and printed from the manuscripts,” the editors proudly noted) by a remarkable roster of figures in the European avant-garde: Kassák, Albert-Birot, Schwitters, Walden, Styrsky and Toyen, Nerzval, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Biebl, Breton, Honzl, Goll, Richter, Eggeling, Herzfelde, Burian, Antheil, Arp, Branko ve Poliansky, Teige, Doesburg, Ozenfant, Tzara, Moholy-Nagy, Baumeister, Seifert, Gropius, Rossmann, Václavek, and many others; illustrations of work by Grosz, Bellmer, de Chirico, Klee, Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy, Murayama, Sima, Albers, Brandt, Le Corbusier, Doesburg, Domela, Eggeling, Garnier, Gropius, Kiesler, Krejcar, Lipchitz, Lissitzky, Lurçat, Malevich, Meyerhold, Mendelsohn, Moholy-Nagy, Puni, Richter, Rössler, Schlemmer, Schwitters, Shterenberg, Styrsky, Tatlin, Toyen, et al. Covers very slightly dusty; a fine copy.

Polenius, G. Utriusque Thesauri Antiquitatum Romanarum Graecarumque Nova Supplementa. 5 vols. With 62 engraved plates (2 double-folding) and more than 400 illus. within the text. Ventiis: Pasquali, 1737. Royal folio. All newly bound in uniform half morocco. These encyclopedic compendia are regarded as the beginning of modern historiography. This rare, complete ensemble contains the uniform Venetian edition of the first three works, which had originally appeared in Leiden (1697-1702), Utrecht (1694) and The Hague (1716) respectively; and the first edition of the accompanying supplement by Polenius. These encyclopedic compendia treat all aspects of classical antiquity and the ancient world: history, literature, topography, religion, jurisprudence, numismatics, festivities and obsequies, and architecture and the fine arts, among others. Many of the articles are written on the scale of full-length treatises, and in many instances are drawn from earlier periods of humanist scholarship, so that Aldus Manutius, Justus Lipsius, and Scaliger, for example, are represented among the authors, in addition to contemporary writers, such as Pietro Bellori (and Pietro Santi Bartoli among the illustrators). The works are extensively illustrated with engraved plates of statuary, architectural monuments, coins and medals, innumerable inscriptions, and maps and plans. The large and handsome allegorical vignettes centered on the title-pages of the final work, engraved by Pietro Monaco, are based on designs by Giambattista Tiepolo. A very fine set, uncut, with large margins.

(including errata list). 121 full-page engraved plates (of which 10 hors texte, of orders). 72 etched pictorial vignette culs-de-lampe (including repeats), nearly all signed by P.E. Babel, but with others by Pierre Soubeyran, et al. 4to. Contemporary calf gilt. Raised bands. First edition of this treatise; a second appeared in 1770. Jeaurat (1724-1803), a distinguished academician who had studied with Sébastien Le Clerc, taught for many years at the École Militaire. “Like many other books produced in the mid-1700s, it still lies within an older tradition, although it dates to the turn to neoclassicism. The vignettes at the end of the chapters are in the rococo style, and suggest the animated vignettes of Le Clerc’s textbook on geometry of 1643. The perspective methods included in the book are designed to solve problems that painters might encounter, such as reflections in water, and shadows produced by candlelight” (Millard). Despite their scale, Babel’s vignettes are extremely rich, in fact almost sumptuous, and interesting in their incorporation of architectural motifs. Light browning; corners worn, small crack at top of front hinge. With the eighteenth-century ownership inscription of “Thiac l’aîné,” identified in a later note as “architecte de Bordeaux.”

516    JONES, OWEN & GOURY, JULES. Plans, Elevations, Sections and Details of the Alhambra from Drawings Taken on the Spot in 1834 by the late M. Jules Goury and in 1834 and 1837 by Owen Jones. With a complete translation of the Arabic inscriptions and an historical notice of the Kings of Granada from the conquest of that city by the Arabs to the expulsion of the Moors, by Mr. Pasqual de Gayanos. 2 vols. Chromolithographic and printed titles for each volume, dedication and advertisement leaves, lists of subscribers and of plates, text (20pp.), and 101 plates, plus chromolithographic tail piece. Of the 104 plates and preliminaries, 69 are chromolithographs. Lrg. folio. Marbled boards, 3/4 dark green morocco (slightly rubbed). Large paper subscriber’s edition. Jones' fascination with Islamic art and decoration began in 1833, on a trip to Egypt and Turkey in the company of Jules Goury, a French architect whom he had met in Greece, who shared Jones' interest in architectural polychromy. In the following year, Jones and Goury visited Granada, making extensive, very exacting drawings, with ambitious plans for a publication on the Alhambra and its ornamental decoration. Following Goury's sudden death there from cholera, Jones was obliged to continue the work on his own, making a second trip to Granada in 1837 to make additional sketches. The reluctance of London printers to take on the project, and Jones' particular need for flat, opaque and accurate color schemes to reproduce decorative motifs, led him to set up his own lithographic firm in London, to undertake what was to be the first significant chomolithographic publication in England. Three trial numbers (of ten planned) were issued in 1836-37; the final book did not appear until 1842-1845. Front flyleaf of Vol. I remargined; faint, unobtrusive, marginal waterstain in Vol. II. Occasional spotting as usual. A nice copy.

576    LE ROY [JULIEN-DAVID]. Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grèce. Considérés du côté de l’histoire et du côté de l’architecture. Seconde édition corrigée et augmentée. 2 vols. in 1. xxiv, 54, xx, 54pp., 61 copper-engraved plates after Le Roy, principally by Le Bas, but also by Patte and Neufforge. Lrg. folio. Nineteenth-century marbled boards, 1/4 calf (rubbed, hinges cracked). Second edition; first published Paris, 1758. An early and very influential work on classical architecture, with sensitive picturesque compositions of the major monuments of Athens and elsewhere. Le Roy (1724? - 1803), successor to Blondel as professor of architecture, and a teacher of Durand, was one of the foremost exponents of Greek taste. “Le Roy’s ‘Ruines,’ though it does not provide a comprehensive theory and appears to waver between the genres of the treatise on aesthetics, the voyage pittoresque, and the archaeological publication, breaks new ground in providing a synthesis of archaeological findings with a body of architectural theory developed and expanded from the important controversy of Claude Perrault and François Blondel. It also includes material based on new rational and historical attitudes which were being developed by Jacques-François Blondel and would find their most extreme statement in the work of Claude Nicolas Ledoux and Étienne-Louis Boullée. Perhaps the most important, Le Roy’s treatise provides the theoretical framework and many of the models for French neoclassical architecture” (Dora Wiebenson, in Millard).

This second edition is extensively revised and restructured from the first, incorporating new research on ancient theatres and remarks on James Stuart and Nicholas Revett’s ‘Antiquities of Athens,’ while ignoring (as Wiebenson points out) Piranesi’s attack on his work. Among the new material included in the 1770 edition is a plate on the evolution of temple design, showing in three parallel lines, the development from the primitive hut to Solomon’s Temple and to the Temple of the Sun in Baalbek, and from the catacombs to St. Peter’s--a model which served as a basis for the typologies in Durand’s “Recueil.” Somewhat dusty, occasional creasing of the plates (one plate with clean tear in margin).

            Paris (Louis-François Delatour), 1770.                                                                                                                      $5,500.00
