8 ALLAIS, L.-J. Grands prix d'architecture. Letterpress title and table leaf, fully engraved dec. half-title, and 120 line-engraved plates. Lrg. folio. Modern cloth. This copy is from the preferred tirage on papier grand Colombier d'Hollande (apart from those on ordinary paper, and the deluxe tirage of hand-colored copies). This is the first of four series of engravings publishing the premiated designs of the Académie; it covers the years 1791-1805. It was to be followed by Baltard's and Vaudoyers's volumes for the years 1803-1815 (published 1818) and for 1816-1831 (published 1834), and by a final folio published in Liège in 1842. Normand, Durand and Thibault, and Percier are among the architects represented. A very fine and fresh copy, ex-libris Avery Library (bookplate only, with cancellation; otherwise unmarked).

55 BAXTER, SYLVESTER. Spanish-Colonial Architecture in Mexico. With photographic plates by Henry Greenwood Peabody and plans by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. 12 vols. Text (1 volume): xii, 236pp. 11 plans hors texte. 63 tipped-in halftone illustrations. Plates (11 volumes): 197 original silver-print photographs, loose as issued, each mounted in windowed passepartouts with extensive printed commentary on the verso of each mount. Folio. Publisher's heavy green cloth portfolios with leather labels, uniform with the text. This pioneer survey, illustrated with brilliant architectural photographs by Henry Greenwood Peabody, was privately printed in two editions: the "Tresguerras Edition," with portfolios of loose plates of original photographs, as here, and the "Gómez de Mora" edition, issued in a single volume with tipped-in illustrations only. As noted by Smith and Wilder in their bibliographical guide to the art of Latin America, copies of the "Tresguerras Edition" vary somewhat in the corpus of plates. In the set at hand, 197 plates of photographs are present, out of a possible complement of 200; and of these, one is present in a newly made photographic copy, together with a photocopy of the accompanying text on the original mount. Also, in the present set, the text volume derives from the Gómez de Mora Edition, rather than the Tresguerras Edition. Bindings somewhat worn and rubbed, otherwise a fine copy of this grand and rare publication.

98 BOISSARD, J.J. I. [-VI.] Pars Romanae urbis topographiae & antiquitatum, quâ succintê & breviter describuntur omnia quae tam publicê quan privatim videntur animadversione digna. Tabula chorographica totius Italiae: Figurae aliquot eleganter in aere incisae; Artifice Theodor de Bry Leod. sive fra., omnia foras recens edita. 6 vols. in 1. Including 6 etched titles, 2 etched portraits (later repeated), 1 etched folding map and 520 copper-engraved plates (of which 9 folding). Stout folio. Fine contemporary full vellum, gilt on both covers with the elaborate armorial supralibros of H. Ph. Eduard Fugger (with cypher HE at top). Part II in the second edition ("Editio altera accuratior," 1628), the balance in the first edition. The collation of Part I is anomalous with that in the standard bibliographies, but the work appears to be altogether complete in this form. The plates for Parts I-IV were engraved by Theodore de Bry himself; later parts werre completed by his two sons. Boissard's publication is one of the most important of all topographic studies of Rome and its antiquities. The library of H. Ph. Eduard Fugger, some 14,000 volumes by 17,000 writers (short works being bound up together, as was then the custom) was bought by the Emperor Ferdinand III in 1655 and taken by rafts and boats to Vienna, where the books and their catalogue are now in the Nationalbibliothek. Institutional ex-libris. Light external soiling; a few pale stains; generally a very fine copy with strong impressions of the plates, and good margins.
Frankfurt ([J. Feyerabend for Theodore de Bry]), 1597-1628. $8,500.00

189 (CHICAGO TRIBUNE TOWER) The International Competition for a New Administration Building for the Chicago Tribune MCMXXII. Containing all the designs submitted in response to the Chicago Tribune's $100,000 offer commemorating its seventy fifth anniversary, June 10, 1922. (8), 103, (5)pp., 281 full-page plates with facing captions. 27 illus. Lrg. stout 4to. Original burlap-covered boards, rebacked in buckram, preserving the original label. Ex-library copy, somewhat worn and shaken. As noted by Siegfried Giedion, "the competition...drew entries from everywhere. The projects submitted give an invaluable crosssection of the architecture of this period." The pervasive preference for 'Woolworth Gothic' notwithstanding, there are a few brave essays in modernism by Walter Gropius, Bruno and Max Taut, Adolf Loos and others, as well as submissions by Bragdon, Burnham, Goodhue, Holabird & Roche, Eliel Saarinen, et al. Raymond Hood was the winner.

191 (CHINEA) The Presentation of the Chinea. A collection of 52 engravings documenting the grand temporary architecture and macchine designed by Paolo Posi and others for these annual festivities in Rome, 1728-1775. 52 engraved plates by Giuseppe Vasi, Giuseppe Pozzi, Giovanni Battista Sintes, Miguel Sorellò, Louis Le Lorrain, Carlo Bellicard et al., after drawings by Giuseppe Palazzi, Francisco Preciado and others, depicting the designs of Paolo Posi, Michelangelo Specchi, Gabrielle Valvassori and Giuseppe Doria. Broadsheets (470 x 610 mm. and smaller).
A very rare collection of prints recording the presentation in Rome each year during the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul (June 29th), of the ceremonial tribute of a single white horse (the Chinea) from the King of Naples, via the Colonna family, to the Pope. The presentation was accompanied by firework displays both on the evening before and on the night of the feast day, launched from spectacularly elaborate stage settings (macchine) set up either in the Piazza SS. Apostoli, next to the Palazzo Colonna, or in front of the Palazzo Farnese. Inaugurated in 1722, the practice of these fireworks continued, with occasional interruptions, for some sixty years, and inspired extremely grandiose and fantastic architectural and scenographic inventions, involving either fully constructed temporary monuments, or, for a period, painted backdrops depicting similar structures, with figures: allegorical tableaux vivants, underlaid with political symbolism, of gods and goddesses in billowing clouds and tempietti, complex triumphal arches, bridges with elephants and Egyptian obelisks, fortresses with exploding cannon, and multi-level theatrical sets with baldachin columns and squads of musicians seated at harpsichords. Chinoiserie and neoclassical elements appeared in the designs when in fashion.
It seems that three engravings were produced annually, two of the fireworks and one of the set built for the presentation itself. The series was begun in 1722, and 106 prints were issued in all. The majority of the plates in the present collection show the structures erected for the fireworks, and most of these (42) depict inventions of the architect and designer Paolo Posi (Siena 1708-Rome 1776), who succeeded Gabriele Valvassori in 1732 as architect to the Colonna family. In this collection, his work is represented for the years 1751 to 1775, six months before his death. The collection includes at least one plate for the festivities in the following years: 1728, 1731-33, 1738, 1745, 1747-48, 1750-55. The Posi prints are primarily engravings by Giuseppe Vasi (after drawings by Giuseppe Palazzi) or Giuseppe Pozzi. Other designers than Posi are, however, represented, including Gabrielle Valvassori, Michelangelo Specchi, and Louis Le Lorrain (a rare instance in which the designer also drew and engraved his own print).
The collection is accompanied by one further plate not of the Chinea, but of a similar type and by Miguel Sorellò, depicting the fireworks monument designed by Ferdinando Fuga for the marriage of Don Carlo Borbone and Maria Amalia of Saxony in 1738. Most plates with original central fold; light browning and some small tears, 10 plates with more obtrusive staining, one plate heavily brown and backed onto linen. Oblong folio. Each plate is separately matted. Red cloth clamshell box.
Roma, 1728-1775. $30,000.00
