52 BERENSON, BERNARD. The Drawings of the Florentine Painters. Classified, criticized and studied as documents in the history and appreciation of Tuscan art. With a copious catalogue raisonné. 2 vols. 330pp.; 200pp. 180 hinged full-page color collotype plates hors texte. Tissue guards. Massive folio. New cloth. Edition limited to 355 numbered copies, printed at the Ballantyne Press. The first edition, finely printed and equipped with a magnificent corpus of color facsimile plates (which were replaced in subsequent editions by much reduced monochrome illustrations of inferior quality). Berenson's greatest single achievement as a connoisseur, and a landmark in art historical methodology. No such systematic catalogue of drawings had ever been attempted, and the text volume equally broke new ground by integrating the results obtained in the catalogue into a coherent picture of an artist's activity. Very rare.
